InterVarsity and Campus Bible Fellowship say the public college cannot deny recognition because their student leaders must affirm the Christian faith.

Two Christian student organizations are challenging SUNY Broome Community College over a policy they say prevents faith-based groups from choosing leaders who share their beliefs.

Campus Bible Fellowship filed a federal lawsuit in early September, following a separate case brought by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Both groups contend that the public college withheld or withdrew official recognition because their constitutions require student leaders to affirm Christian doctrine.

The dispute over membership and leadership

According to the complaints and legal groups representing the students, the clubs welcome students to attend activities while reserving leadership for Christians who can advance the organizations’ religious mission. The college’s nondiscrimination rules prohibit recognized student groups from discriminating on the basis of religion, among other protected characteristics.

The Christian organizations argue that applying that rule to their leaders changes the nature of the groups themselves. They say a Bible fellowship cannot remain meaningfully Christian if the college can require it to accept leaders who reject its statement of faith.

SUNY Broome is a public institution, making the First Amendment central to the cases. The plaintiffs allege violations of free speech, free exercise, expressive association and equal protection. The college had not offered a detailed public response to the newest suit in the cited reporting, and the allegations have not yet been resolved by a court.

Why This Matters

Official recognition often determines whether a student group can reserve rooms, participate in campus fairs, communicate through school channels and apply for student-activity funds. Losing recognition can therefore limit a club’s practical ability to operate even if students remain free to meet informally.

The underlying principle reaches beyond Christianity. Secular, political, cultural and religious organizations all depend on leaders who can faithfully represent their defining commitments. A fair public-campus policy should protect equal access without forcing a belief-based association to surrender the beliefs that give it identity.

THRIVE! has reported on a related equal-access resolution involving a Christian Good News Club in a California school district. Although the legal settings differ, both disputes ask whether religious groups receive the same practical access offered to comparable secular organizations.

THRIVE! Perspective

Religious liberty is the civil freedom to worship, organize, speak, and live according to faith while respecting the equal rights of others.

First Peter 3:15 instructs Christians to give a reason for their hope with gentleness and respect. Campus ministries have the right to hire those who share their faith and values. Period.
