Age, health continue to be a concern for Biden, Democrat Whitehouse hopes

Biden was cognitively dull, hard to follow, and ineffective in his communication. Trump appeared strong, sharp, and messaging consistent and onpoint in first major debate of the election season.

Economy, Gas, and Food Prices

The debate between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden kicked off with a heated discussion about the economy, rising gas prices, and food costs. Biden blamed Trump for the current economic woes, while Trump countered that it was Biden’s reckless policies, including the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline and bad spending decisions, that caused the issues.

Abortion and Border Issues

As the debate progressed, the candidates clashed over abortion rights and border security. Trump advocated for state jurisdiction over abortion, while Biden presented contrasting views. On border security, Trump accused Biden of causing chaos, a claim Biden strongly denied.

Veterans and International Affairs

Trump boasted about his administration’s support for veterans, claiming it surpassed all previous efforts. Biden countered by asserting that he has done more for veterans than any other president in American history. The debate grew more intense when Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not respect Biden. Trump further criticized Biden’s handling of international affairs, calling the Afghanistan withdrawal the most embarrassing moment in U.S. history and blaming Biden’s perceived weakness for emboldening Putin to invade Ukraine.

Ukraine and Israel

The Ukraine conflict became a major point of contention. Trump declared the war should never have started and criticized the $200 billion spent on it. He promised to settle the conflict between Putin and Zelenskyy before taking office if elected. Biden defended his support for Ukraine, highlighting NATO’s involvement and warning that Putin would not stop without resistance. On Israel, Biden expressed his support and emphasized the need to eliminate Hamas carefully, while Trump questioned the U.S. expenditure on Ukraine instead of seeking more help from allies.

January 6 and Personal Attacks

The debate took a personal turn when discussing the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump criticized Biden for persecuting January 6 Capitol “rioters” and accused the committee of destroying evidence. Biden responded by calling Trump a “convicted felon” and recounted various allegations against him. Trump fired back, calling Biden a criminal and accusing him of making quid pro quo deals with other nations.

Race and Climate Change

On racial issues, Biden spoke about black child care and the need for more action, while Trump accused Biden of harming minorities through economic policies. A fact-check segment clarified that Trump is not trying to cut police funding, contrary to Biden’s claims. Trump highlighted his administration’s achievements for black Americans and criticized Biden’s record.

When climate change was discussed, Biden touted his administration’s extensive climate change legislation. Trump shifted focus to healthcare, claiming he reduced insulin prices and accused Biden of destroying social security and Medicare by failing to secure the southern border.

Health

Health issues were also a point of debate. Trump proudly stated he had taken two cognitive tests and aced them both, and mentioned his victories in two golf club championships. Mentioned Biden has not taken any. Biden, with a raspy voice and often unclear sentences, said he has a 6 handicap in golf. Trump mocked Biden’s golf skills and asked him to stop acting like a child.

Election Integrity and Closing Remarks

In their closing remarks, Biden promised tax reforms, healthcare improvements, and reducing the national debt. He accused Trump of implementing tariffs that hurt Americans and took credit for reducing insulin costs. Trump countered by criticizing Biden’s leadership, promising to restore American strength and improve military respect. On election integrity, Trump asserted he would accept the results of a fair election, while Biden dismissed Trump as a whiner and denied any election interference.

Moderation and Public Reception

Throughout the debate, CNN moderators were fair, and took an unbiased approach, asking questions that mostly resonated with the concerns of many Americans.

The debate concluded with both candidates emphasizing their vastly different visions for the future of America.
