How Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts Leads to God’s Glory
What if you’re carrying a gift you’ve never opened? The Bible says every believer has been given spiritual gifts—unique abilities from the Holy Spirit to strengthen the church and reflect God’s love. In Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12–14, we get a glimpse of these treasures: prophecy, serving, teaching, healing, mercy, and more. They’re not just for the “super spiritual”—they’re for you, me, and every follower of Christ. So how do we uncover them and start thriving in what God’s designed us to do? Let’s dive in.
Spiritual Gifts: Tools for a Purpose
Romans 12:6–8 lists practical spiritual gifts —mercy, serving, giving, encouragement—practical ways God equips us to reveal his love.
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Then there’s 1 Corinthians 12:8–10, unveiling gifts of the Spirit like wisdom, faith, healing, and speaking in tongues—bold signs of the Spirit’s power. Chapter 14 zooms in on prophecy and tongues, urging us to use them to build up, not show off.
These gifts aren’t random. They’re handpicked by the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:11) to fit who you are and how you’re called to serve others. The catch? You might not spot them until you start looking.
1 Peter 4:10 admonishes believers that the gifts are given to serve others. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Five Steps to Discover Your Gifts
Unwrapping your spiritual gifts is less about a lightning-bolt moment and more about a journey. Here’s how to begin:
1.Pray for Insight
Start with the Giver. Ask God, “What have You placed in me?” Both natural inclination and spiritual power can take your natural skills and abilities and make them exponentially effective. The Lord knows you better than anyone—trust Him to reveal how he made you and how you can serve others with your spiritual gifts and natural abilities and developed skills.
2. Dig into Scripture
Read Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12–14. Which spiritual gifts spark excitement or motivation in you? Do you feel drawn to teaching, or does the idea of praying for healing stir your faith? Let the Word be your mirror.
3. Listen to Your Community
Sometimes others see our gifts before we do. Ask trusted friends or leaders, “Where do you see God using me?” Sarah’s friend noticed her mercy—your people might spot yours too.
4. Step Out and Try
Gifts often surface in action. Volunteer to lead a group, serve a meal, or pray boldly for someone. You might discover a knack for leadership or a quiet power in faith you didn’t know you had. As with anything, you need to practice and utilize your gifts to develop talent and skill in using them. Just because you have a desire to teach and a gift to do it, doesn’t mean you’ll be amazing the first time you teach. Practice, practice, practice and you’ll improve over time – this is called stewardship of the gift God has given you.
5. Focus on the Why
These gifts aren’t for your ego—they’re for God’s glory and the church’s good (1 Cor. 14:12). When you use them to lift others up, you’ll feel the thrill of living out your purpose. Have a heart to serve and help others and you’ll find yourself in the right place at the right time to utilize your God given gifts, if you’re open and ready.
Thriving in Your Spiritual Gift
Discovering your spiritual gifts isn’t about adding a badge to your faith—it’s about stepping into the life God planned for you. Imagine the joy of seeing a friend encouraged by your words, a prayer answered through your faith, or a community strengthened by your service. That’s thriving: not just surviving faith, but flourishing in it.
So, what’s your next step? Maybe it’s a prayer tonight or a conversation tomorrow. Whatever it is, don’t wait. Your gifts are ready to be unwrapped—and the body of Christ is waiting for what you’ll bring.
