A 90-Hour Celebration of Scripture on Capitol Hill
In a powerful display of unity and devotion, the U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon commenced on April 26, transforming the West Terrace steps of Capitol Hill into a sacred space. Now in its 35th year, this extraordinary event brings together hundreds of participants who read the Bible aloud from Genesis to Revelation in a continuous 90-hour relay that concludes on April 30 at 10 a.m. ET.
What sets this marathon apart is its unique status as the only 24-hour event permitted on U.S. Capitol grounds, a privilege granted through approval from both House and Senate leadership. The readings, conducted in languages as diverse as Dutch, Korean, and Mandarin, reflect the reach of the scriptures and the event.
This year, Faith & Liberty, the evangelistic ministry behind the marathon, also hosted a Congressional Bible Reading on Tuesday in the House of Representatives’ Chaplain’s office. This special event offers members of Congress the chance to participate in the readings, with the sounds of scripture echoing just steps from where votes are cast on the House floor.
A Tradition Rooted in Faith and History
The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon was founded in 1990 by Dr. John Hash and Dr. Corinthia Boone, with inspiration from Vonette Bright, co-founder of Campus Crusade for Christ and a key figure in the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Bright’s vision was to align the marathon with the National Day of Prayer, creating a moment for collective reflection and spiritual renewal. In its inaugural year, Dr. Boone led 30 pastors to the Capitol’s West Lawn, where each reader held a carnation, passing it to the next as a symbol of continuity and shared purpose.
Since then, the marathon has grown into a public celebration of faith, open to all who wish to participate. Time slots remain available for those eager to read God’s Word aloud, and interested individuals can sign up online or by calling 202-737-1776. Faith & Liberty is also sharing the event’s progress through video updates on their Facebook page, offering a glimpse into this inspiring gathering.
A Beacon of Hope in Uncertain Times
Peggy Nienaber, Vice President of Faith & Liberty, emphasized the marathon’s significance in today’s climate. “The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon celebrates the power of God’s Word and the right of all Americans to exercise their freedom to religiously express themselves,” she said. “Especially during this time as the nation grapples with uncertainty and unrest, the Bible is the foundation of America, and within those pages, we find the only answer for hope for this nation.”
Faith & Liberty’s mission extends beyond the marathon, as the ministry works year-round to share the gospel with the nation’s top elected and appointed officials. Through personal relationships, Bible distribution, and events like panel discussions, Bible studies, and worship services, the organization seeks to bring spiritual guidance to the heart of government.
A Growing Movement
The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon is more than an event—it’s a testament to the enduring power of scripture and the strength of community. As voices from all walks of life unite to proclaim the Bible’s message, the marathon stands as a reminder of hope, faith, and the freedoms that define America. For those inspired to take part, the opportunity to join this historic event awaits on the steps of the Capitol.
