Attorney General Accused of Censoring Life-Saving Information

The lawsuit, brought forward by the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), Gianna’s House, and Options Care Center, argues that the Attorney General is abusing her authority by attempting to silence the centers’ ability to inform women about the possibility of reversing the effects of abortion pills through a progesterone treatment. This naturally occurring hormone, which has been used for decades to sustain pregnancies and prevent miscarriages, can sometimes counteract the effects of abortion drugs if administered in time.

“Women in New York have saved their babies because they had access to information about Abortion Pill Reversal through their local pregnancy centers. But the attorney general is denying women the opportunity to even hear about this life-saving option,” said ADF Senior Counsel Caleb Dalton, who will be arguing the case in court.
Dalton emphasized that many women experience regret after beginning the abortion process and may seek to halt the procedure. For those who change their minds after taking the first abortion pill, taking supplemental progesterone may offer a chance to save their baby’s life. The pregnancy centers involved in the lawsuit believe that women have the right to know about this option, and they argue that the Attorney General’s actions violate their First Amendment rights to free speech and religious expression.
The Attorney General’s office has recently sued 11 faith-based pro-life pregnancy centers across the state, accusing them of spreading “false and misleading” information about progesterone treatment, despite evidence supporting its effectiveness. The centers, however, contend that their speech is being targeted solely because of their pro-life stance, and they are seeking the court’s protection to continue providing truthful and potentially life-saving information to women.
Efficacy of Progesterone
Multiple studies support the efficacy of progesterone in reversing the effects of abortion pills, with statistics indicating that it has likely saved over 5,000 unborn lives, achieving a success rate of 64-68%. Despite this, the Attorney General’s office has moved to suppress this information, which the centers argue is a politically motivated attack on their freedom to speak and practice their religious beliefs.
The oral arguments in this high-stakes case will be heard at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York on Thursday, August 15, at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
