Chinese President Xi Jinping is headed to Washington for high-stakes talks with President Trump as the world’s two largest economies navigate trade tensions, artificial intelligence competition and Taiwan.
President Donald Trump is preparing to host Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington this week for talks that could shape the next phase of U.S.-China relations.
Xi is expected to arrive Wednesday, with formal talks scheduled for Thursday. The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing attempt to preserve a fragile trade truce while competing over artificial intelligence, advanced technology and global supply chains.
Taiwan is expected to be a major point of disagreement. Reuters reports Xi is expected to press President Trump to halt U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the island.
China has also announced new export controls on two drug-precursor chemicals, requiring permits for shipments to the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The summit will test whether the two governments can contain their disagreements while maintaining economic ties between the world’s two largest economies.
