New communication channel will focus on potentially dangerous artificial-intelligence incidents as the two nations prepare for high-level talks
The United States and China have agreed to establish a formal dialogue on artificial-intelligence safety, including an “incident line” designed to improve communication if dangerous AI-related events occur.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said U.S. and Chinese officials discussed the proposal during meetings with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of President Trump’s upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The talks are expected to address potential AI risks including autonomous systems, cyber threats and national-security concerns. Officials from the two countries are expected to meet again in roughly two months in Shenzhen, China, to continue the discussions.
Xi is scheduled to visit the United States Sept. 23–25, with a meeting with President Trump expected in Washington on Sept. 24. Trade, critical minerals, tariffs, Taiwan and artificial intelligence are among the issues expected to feature prominently in the discussions.
