The Mosaic Church documentary explores the earliest Christian worship space, revealing faith, persecution, and history beneath an Israeli prison
A groundbreaking new documentary, The Mosaic Church, sheds light on one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 21st century—the Megiddo Mosaic. This 1,800-year-old floor, discovered beneath a maximum-security prison in Israel, marks the site of the oldest-known Christian worship space, dating back to AD 230.
Produced by Evolve Studios in partnership with Angel Studios and Museum of the Bible, the film explores the mosaic’s historical and spiritual significance. Featuring narration by survivalist and TV star Bear Grylls, The Mosaic Church brings to life the resilience of early Christians who worshiped in the heart of a Roman military camp just 15 miles from Nazareth.
A Great Discovery of 21st Century
“We are thrilled to make this film available for the public and continue to tell the remarkable story of one of the most important archeological discoveries of the 21st century,” said Bobby Duke, chief curatorial officer at Museum of the Bible. “This mosaic is critical for encountering and understanding early Christians at a time when they might have suffered persecution by the Roman Empire. It is a story that must be told.”
The Megiddo Mosaic contains some of the earliest archaeological evidence of Christian faith, including the phrase “God Jesus Christ” and an ancient fish symbol. Dr. Yotam Tepper, excavation director with the Israel Antiquities Authority, emphasized its importance: “The fascinating mosaic presents groundbreaking physical evidence of the practices and beliefs of early Christians, including the first archaeological instance of the phrase ‘God Jesus Christ.’”
On Display in Washington D.C.
Originally uncovered in 2005, the mosaic was preserved by the Israel Antiquities Authority and made its world debut at Museum of the Bible in September 2024, where it remains on display until July 6, 2025.
“Uncovering the Megiddo Mosaic has been a powerful journey into the early Christian spirit of resilience and faith. I am honored to narrate this story, bringing to life the legacy of the world’s oldest-known church for audiences worldwide,” shared Bear Grylls.
The documentary offers an immersive blend of expert insights, historical analysis, and firsthand accounts of the excavation, painting a vivid picture of Christian life just a few generations after the New Testament era.
The Mosaic Church is now streaming exclusively at Angel.com/MOTB and on the Angel App. For those eager to witness this extraordinary piece of Christian history in person, the Megiddo Mosaic can be viewed at Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. now through July 6, 2025.
