Magic Johnson joins ownership team of Washington Commanders
Magic Johnson is a man who needs no introduction. Though it’s been almost 30 years since the NBA all-star put on the LA Lakers uniform, the man has made his mark in more ways than just basketball. The star forward has become a successful businessman in his own right, most recently becoming part owner of the Washington Commanders NFL football team. Writing on Twitter, Johnson gave the glory to God for the incredible opportunity.
Glory to God
“God is so good…I still can’t believe it! I am currently living in an answered prayer. Since beginning my journey as an athlete and now businessman and team owner, it’s all been a dream that has come full circle. I grew up playing football as a kid, I’m a huge NFL fan, and I watch games every week. Now, I get to co-own a storied franchise, the Washington Commanders.”
Johnson has become a successful entrepreneur with businesses that include Canyon Johnson, a $1 billion real estate fund, Yucaipa Johnson, a $500 million private equity fund, ASPIRE, a new African American television network, SodexoMagic, Magic Airport Holdings, Inner City Broadcasting Corporation, Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies, and Vibe Holdings, LLC. Magic is the Chairman of the multicultural media company that houses the Vibe, Uptown, and Soul Train brands. Johnson is also part of the ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Perfect timing
“This is truly the biggest achievement in my business career and a historic moment for the entire Black community,” Johnson said on Twitter. “Talk about God’s perfect timing. This was the right organization for me to be a part of given it’s global appeal, history of winning, and the diverse fanbase and DMV community. I have a special relationship with the DMV. Many people don’t know I’ve done business in the Washington, DC area for many years. I was one of the owners of the Washington Hilton, I built multiple Starbucks franchises and Magic Johnson Theaters, and empowerment centers with the Magic Johnson Foundation. I also have my company SodexoMAGIC headquartered here. The DMV community has embraced and supported me, and I am honored and ecstatic to be a co-owner of the Commanders franchise!”
“What a great day! To be an NFL owner of the Washington Commanders, this is one of the greatest days of my life. The way the fans received us, the way the employees are fired up, and the amazing Redskins alumni…WOW. The players are ready to go out and perform on Sunday!,” Johnson continued in his Twitter feed.
“A big big big thank you to Josh Harris for allowing me to be his partner! Thank you to my business partner Eric Holoman, President of MJE Christina Francis, VP of MJE Alexia Henderson, President of SodexoMAGIC Charles Johnson and my longtime business partner and friend Mike Triplett for joining me on such a historic day!”
