Pentecostal Preacher and Gospel Singer Jimmy Swaggart Passes Away at 90 After Decades of Global Ministry
Evangelist, gospel singer, and global Christian broadcaster Jimmy Swaggart has passed into eternity at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of faith, worship, and unwavering devotion to the message of the cross.
The announcement was shared today by the Swaggart family, along with the verse from 2 Timothy 4:7-8: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Indeed, Brother Swaggart’s life was a testament to enduring faith in Christ, even amid trials and triumphs.
“For over seven decades, Brother Swaggart poured out his life preaching the gospel, singing songs of the faith, and pointing millions to the saving power of Jesus Christ and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit,” the family wrote. “His voice echoed through nations, his music softened hearts, and his message never changed: Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, Swaggart rose to international prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as a Pentecostal preacher, televangelist, and recording artist. Through the Jimmy Swaggart Telecast and his long-running ministry based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he reached tens of millions of homes worldwide. His music—filled with heartfelt hymns and Spirit-filled praise—touched hearts across denominations and cultures.
While his ministry experienced public controversy in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Brother Swaggart faced those moments with sorrow, public repentance and a determination to live free of sin and continue preaching the message of the cross. Though the scandals marked a turning point in his public reach, his commitment to Jesus Christ and His redemptive work remained unchanged. In the years that followed, he rebuilt much of the ministry through SonLife Broadcasting Network, gospel music, and faithful preaching until the very end.
“He was not just a preacher—he was a worshiper, a warrior, and a witness to the grace and mercy of God,” the family said. “He was a man whose faith was steadfast and always entered whatever door the Lord opened. And the Lord honored that faith.”
Swaggart is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Frances Swaggart, and a large extended family who have all played key roles in the ministry, including son Donnie Swaggart, grandson Gabriel Swaggart, and other family members involved in music and ministry.
The family expressed deep gratitude to the staff at Baton Rouge General Medical Center for their care and compassion during Brother Swaggart’s final days.
Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.
