Hamas-Israel Ceasefire Shatters as Strikes Hit Gaza

Even as President Trump negotiates peace in the Russia-Ukraine war, a fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel collapsed early Tuesday morning, as Israeli forces launched widespread airstrikes across the Gaza Strip. The offensive ended 17 days of tenuous calm following the expiration of the truce’s first phase on March 1, escalating the 17-month conflict. Palestinian health authorities report over 400 deaths, while Hamas confirmed the loss of at least five senior officials in its Gaza leadership, per The New York Times, leaving the fate of dozens of hostages in limbo.

A Fragile Truce Unravels

The ceasefire, brokered in late January by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, paused hostilities sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 and saw 251 people abducted. The truce’s first phase secured the release of 33 Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, but it expired on March 1. For 17 days, a shaky de-escalation persisted despite mutual accusations—Israel claimed Hamas rejected an extension plan, while Hamas criticized Israel’s blockade and troop presence in Gaza.

The collapse on March 18 extinguished hopes of further releases, leaving 59 hostages in captivity—a staggering figure encompassing civilians, soldiers, and foreigners. Israeli officials estimate up to 24 remain alive, though uncertainty prevails amid the chaos and Hamas’s silence on their status. The prolonged captivity has sparked outrage in Israel, complicating diplomatic efforts as families demand action.

Deadly Strikes and Hamas Losses

Israel’s pre-dawn strikes on Tuesday targeted Hamas infrastructure across Gaza, from Beit Lahia to Rafah, killing at least 404 people and injuring 562, per Palestinian reports. Hamas confirmed five senior leaders, including Essam Addalees, head of its government, and Mahmoud Abu Watfa, security chief, were among the dead—a significant blow to its command. The New York Times noted three other unnamed officials were also killed. Israel framed the operation as a precision effort to dismantle Hamas and pressure it into releasing the hostages, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing unrelenting “military strength” until all goals are met.

The U.S. backed Israel’s actions, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noting prior consultation with the Trump administration and warning, “All hell will break loose.” Europe, China, and mediators Qatar and Egypt urged de-escalation, with Cairo pushing for urgent talks.

What Lies Ahead?

The deaths of five Hamas leaders may weaken its leverage, yet could harden its stance. Israel demands the hostages’ release and Hamas’s destruction; Hamas insists on a full withdrawal and blockade end. With Gaza’s toll exceeding 48,000 since October 2023, the international community faces mounting pressure to act as the region teeters on the brink of all-out war.
