American Tourist Released After Two Years in Taliban Custody
After more than two years of wrongful detention, George Glezmann, a 65-year-old American citizen from Atlanta, Georgia, has been released by the Taliban and is on his way home to reunite with his wife, Aleksandra. Glezmann’s freedom marks the end of a harrowing ordeal that began on December 5, 2022, when he was seized by the Taliban’s intelligence services while visiting Kabul, Afghanistan, as a tourist. His release, announced today, was secured through negotiations led by U.S. and Qatari mediators, a diplomatic breakthrough celebrated as a “goodwill gesture” by the Taliban.

George Glezmann, an airline mechanic for Delta Airlines, was fulfilling a lifelong passion for cultural exploration when he was abducted. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology earned in 2017 and a travel history spanning well over 100 countries, Glezmann had journeyed to Afghanistan to immerse himself in its rich history and traditions. What was intended as a brief vacation turned into a nightmare when he was detained without just cause or formal charges, leaving his family and supporters in the United States desperate for his safe return.
Wrongful Detainee Status
Designated a wrongful detainee by the U.S. Secretary of State on October 10, 2023, under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-taking Accountability Act, Glezmann’s plight drew widespread attention. His wife, Aleksandra, has been his unwavering advocate, maintaining limited and sporadic telephone contact with him during his captivity. She repeatedly pleaded with the Taliban for his release on humanitarian grounds, citing his deteriorating health, including untreated medical conditions that worsened in detention and required urgent care.
Negotiations for Glezmann’s release intensified since Trump took office, culminating in a deal brokered by U.S. hostage envoy Adam Boehler and Qatari diplomats. Today—U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Glezmann was en route to the United States, having departed Kabul on a Qatari aircraft bound for Doha, accompanied by Boehler. From there, he is expected to return home to Atlanta. Notably, no prisoners were exchanged by the U.S. in this agreement, with sources indicating the Taliban’s decision was a gesture of goodwill aimed at improving relations with Washington.
Reunited with Family
“Today, after two and a half years of captivity in Afghanistan, Delta Airlines mechanic George Glezmann is on his way to be reunited with his wife, Aleksandra,” Rubio said in a statement. “George’s release is a positive and constructive step. President Trump will continue his tireless work to free ALL Americans unjustly detained around the world.” Rubio also praised Qatar for its “steadfast commitment and diplomatic efforts,” which proved instrumental in the negotiations.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and 26th US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad, who was involved in the talks, echoed this sentiment on X, stating, “Today is a good day. We succeeded in obtaining the release of an American citizen, George Glezmann, after two years in detention in Kabul. The Taliban government agreed to free him as a goodwill gesture to [the U.S. president] and the American people.”
Glezmann’s release follows a tumultuous period for U.S.-Taliban relations, coming on the heels of a separate deal in January 2025 that freed two other American detainees, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, in exchange for a Taliban prisoner. Unlike that swap, Glezmann’s freedom required no such trade, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic dynamics. The Taliban has framed these releases as part of a broader effort to “normalize” ties with the U.S. following the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
For Aleksandra Glezmann, the news brings an end to an agonizing wait. Her husband’s health challenges—including a benign tumor, vision loss, and sores developed during captivity—had heightened fears for his survival. Now, as George makes his way home, the focus shifts to his recovery and the joy of their reunion.
