City-owned Anaheim Street facility will expand from 85 to 126 beds
Long Beach has approved an $8.6 million renovation of its city-owned homeless shelter at 702 W. Anaheim St., a project expected to add beds and substantially upgrade the 106-year-old building.
More beds and major building improvements
The City Council approved the renovation contract Tuesday. Plans call for the year-round shelter to expand from 85 beds to 126 and add improvements including showers, air conditioning and changes to the building’s interior layout.
The project also includes installation of a new HVAC system. Funding includes a $500,000 state grant and $400,000 from the Port of Long Beach designated for energy-efficiency improvements.
City purchased building in 2023
Long Beach purchased the property from the Long Beach Rescue Mission for $7.2 million in 2023. Since then, the city has spent about $399,000 on roof repairs before moving ahead with the larger renovation.
The project comes as the city continues to face high demand for emergency shelter space. The Anaheim Street facility is one of four homeless shelters operated by or for the city.
