A Historic Victory for Religious Freedom: Nativity Scene and Christmas Celebration to Take Place on the Steps of the U.S. Capitol
For the first time in history, the southeastern steps of the United States Capitol hosteded a public Nativity Scene, carols, and Christmas message shared on the House of Representatives side of the Capitol.
This unprecedented celebration hosted this week on December 10 marked a monumental victory for religious freedom in America, brought to fruition by a landmark federal court ruling earlier this year. Rev. Mahoney shared his elation over this historic milestone: “We are so very thankful for the opportunity to share the joyful and powerful message of Christmas at the steps of the United States Capitol. In a hurting and wounded world, there is no more redemptive and healing message than the Christmas story.”
The event celebrates the timeless message of hope and peace proclaimed in the biblical Christmas story: “The hopeful declaration of ‘Peace on earth, goodwill toward man’ is one that needs to be heard and embraced by all Americans.”
Mahoney further emphasized the relevance of the prophetic words from Isaiah:“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Rev. Mahoney described the significance of this moment in modern American history as a decisive victory in the so-called “war on Christmas.” The public display of the Nativity on such an influential stage symbolizes the enduring right to celebrate the Christian faith openly:
“This event has ended and won the war on Christmas in the public square. For if Christmas can be celebrated and displayed in the most powerful public square in America, it can be celebrated publicly everywhere.”
