Fame is Fleeting, but the Kingdom of God is Eternal
Each year, Hollywood rolls out the red carpet for the Academy Awards, showcasing the best of the industry success and fame. Celebrities don their finest attire, Oscars are handed out, and speeches overflow with gratitude. For many, this night represents the highest achievement, a validation of years of dedication to their craft. But as Christians, we must ask: Are we investing more in worldly accolades, or are we storing up treasures in heaven?

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The Oscars, while the best of human creativity, serve as a stark reminder that even the best of earthly rewards are temporary. The golden statuette will one day collect dust, careers will fade, and applause will quiet. But the kingdom of heaven is from everlasting to everlasting.
Temporary Glory
In Hollywood, fame is often seen as the ultimate prize. Yet history has shown that no actor, director, or producer can maintain their status indefinitely. Trends change, audiences shift, and what was once celebrated can soon be forgotten. Even the most celebrated stars eventually find their names dimming in the industry’s ever-turning spotlight.
Jesus Himself rejected the pursuit of human approval, declaring in John 5:41, “I receive not glory from men.” Unlike many in Hollywood who chase recognition and validation, Christ sought only the honor that comes from the Father. As His followers, we are called to do the same, focusing on eternal rewards rather than fleeting applause.
Ecclesiastes 1:2 declares, “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” Solomon, the wisest and wealthiest king, recognized that earthly pursuits, no matter how grand, are ultimately meaningless without God.
Storing Up Eternal Treasures
While the world chases after trophies and titles, Christ calls His followers to a higher standard. Are we more concerned with the applause of man or with hearing our Heavenly Father say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23)? Are we using our talents and platforms for eternal purposes, or merely to build our own legacies?
For Christian actors, filmmakers, and creatives, the question is not whether they should engage with the industry but how they should do so. Are we using our influence to glorify God? Are we creating content that uplifts, inspires, and points people to truth? Daniel in Babylon served in a pagan government but remained faithful to God. Joseph rose to prominence in Egypt but never compromised his integrity. Likewise, believers in entertainment must navigate the industry with wisdom, ensuring their ambition does not overshadow their calling.
God’s Plan for Hollywood: A Rise in Faith-Based Films
Though much of Hollywood promotes messages contrary to biblical truth, there is hope. The rise of faith-based films shows that God is still at work in the entertainment industry. Amazon Prime has recently released powerful stories of redemption and hope, such as House of David, giving biblical narratives a global platform. Angel Studios has emerged as a force in faith-based entertainment, with films that challenge mainstream narratives and bring biblical truth to audiences. Additionally, the success of films including Jesus Revolution demonstrated that audiences are hungry for stories that highlight God’s transformative power.
These successes prove that God is not done with Hollywood—He has a plan and is raising up voices of truth in the film industry. As believers, we must pray for and support these efforts, ensuring that faith-based storytelling continues to grow and impact lives.
What Will Last?
At the end of the day, the most important question is this: What will last? The Oscar fame will fade, the headlines will change, and the accolades will diminish. But the work done for Christ endures. Feeding the hungry, sharing the Gospel, discipling others, and standing for righteousness—these are the treasures that no one can take away.
As we reflect on earthly fame and fortune epitomized at the Oscars, it is an opportunity to reflect on where our own hearts are focused. Are we captivated by the world’s glory, or are we seeking the glory of the One who reigns forever? Let us pursue excellence in all we do, but let us also remember that true success is measured not by statues and speeches, but by faithfulness and fruitfulness in God’s eternal kingdom.
