Wildfires devastate California with $50 billion in damages and zero containment as California leadership comes under intense scrutiny for failed policy and economic waste
Los Angeles is in the grip of a catastrophic wildfire crisis, with approximately $50 billion in damages, at least 1,000 structures destroyed, thousands of acres destroyed and five lives lost. Firefighters are battling flames with zero percent containment, as additional fires continue to ignite across the LA county including Hollywood Hills. The situation has been worsened by water shortages, with hydrants in some areas running dry overnight, leaving residents and first responders scrambling for solutions.

The wildfires have exposed gaps in the state’s preparedness and resource allocation. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power chief executive Janisse Quinones revealed that three one-million-gallon water tanks serving the Pacific Palisades area were completely depleted by 3 a.m. on Wednesday. “I need our customers to really conserve water … because the fire department needs the water to fight the fires,” Quinones said, describing the challenge of fighting wildfires with urban water systems as unprecedented.
Mayor Bass Cut $17.6MM
Compounding the crisis is Mayor Karen Bass’s controversial decision to cut $17.6 million ($28.3 million AUD) from the Los Angeles Fire Department budget just months before the fires erupted. Critics argue these budget reductions have hampered the state’s ability to respond effectively.
Amid the chaos, former President Donald Trump has brought to light Governor Gavin Newsom’s irresponsible decisions and failed policies, accusing him of mismanagement and prioritizing fish over citizens.
Trump’s Criticism
“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snowmelt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump said.
He pointed to Newsom’s failed environmental policies, including prioritizing the habitat of the delta smelt over water distribution, as a key factor in the crisis. “He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish … but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid,” Trump declared.
A Crisis Without Containment
As of this moment, no containment has been achieved, and the fires continue to burn at unprecedented levels. Trump took aim at Newsom’s and Los Angeles leaders’ lack of progress, stating, “As of this moment, Gavin Newscum and his Los Angeles crew have contained exactly ZERO percent of the fire. It is burning at levels that even surpass last night. This is not Government.”
President Trump also highlighted the water shortages hindering firefighting efforts, declaring the situation a “true disaster.”
A Call for Change
Trump vowed to prioritize California’s water policies if reelected, promising to demand the restoration of water flow to prevent similar crises in the future. “I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA!” Trump stated as calls for Newsom’s resignation gain momentum online.
Meanwhile, Mayor Bass returned from her trip to Ghana today to an apocalyptic-like scenario across the county. When questioned by a Sky News reporter, Bass refused to comment or
Political and Human Impacts
The devastating wildfires, mounting death toll, and severe infrastructure damage have placed California’s leadership under intense scrutiny. The $50 billion in damages underscores the catastrophic scale of the disaster, while families and communities grapple with the impact of failed leadership and lack of preparation.
