The Hollywood actress shared God got a hold of her at campus Bible study
Actress and “Insecure” star Yvonne Orji went viral this week after admitting at 39 she is still a virgin. The unmarried actress decided to wait after Jesus got a hold of her in high school and changed her heart and realigned her desires.
Raised by strict Nigerian immigrant parents, Orji shared how God changed her life and what she described in a 2017 TEDx talk as“bamboozled by Jesus.” God showed her that her desire to have sex at 18 was not something he approved of while she attended a campus Bible study. The speaker at the study shared how at 25 she was waiting until marriage to have sex.
“She talked about how God was so important to her and how much he had done for her. So this wasn’t a big deal to her,” remembered Orji. “She also called God, ‘Daddy'” and that left an indelible mark on her. An invitation to a deeper relationship with God was something she would answer the call to even as her Hollywood career would take off.
Orji has found true joy
“I don’t mind the wait. What the wait actually does is weed out the riff-raff,” she shared at the TEDx talk in 2017. It’s also taught her about discipline, focus, and power. This was 6 years ago. Now at 39, it’s even rarer, yet it’s a witness to a watching world. Though she would love to find the right man, get married and experience sexual intimacy, Orji is happy and content in the season God has her in. It’s something teens today need to hear more of.
In September Orji told comedian Chelsea Handler that the waiting is worth it, and she’s content with where she is at. “I’m actually really happy. I feel like I don’t think I could’ve ever gotten married before this moment.”
