As the overturning of Roe vs. Wade is imminent, President Biden this week inserted himself into the abortion debate and mistakenly stated (fact check) that no religion really knows when life starts.
“Roe says what all basic mainstream religions have historically concluded, that the existence of a human life and being is a question. Is it at the moment of conception? Is it six months? Is it six weeks? Is it quickening, like Aquinas argued?” Biden said to the press at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Unfortunately, yet again he was and is wrong (is a pattern is emerging here?). The Bible couldn’t be more clear about a matter and contrary to what the gospel according to Biden says, the actual Bible and Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us that the issue of life is unequivocally clear. The Bible implicitly states that life starts in the womb. Furthermore, the Bible goes further stating that not only does life start in the womb, but the work of God forming people inside a mother’s womb is a divine work, a holy work, and as such should not be interfered with. God is in infinite wisdom and invisible nature is actually at work in the process of creating life. This process is so sacred, so holy, that no man should have a place to interfere with the work of God in the womb of a woman. This sacred responsibility is not meant to be limiting or restricting or controlling the will of people but is designed to protect the sanctity of life and protect the rights of the unborn, those with no voice.
“I knew you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart for me before you were born; I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5
What about choice?
The free will of man is a God-given gift. The Bible is clear that God is not into controlling people or creating robots with no mind of their own. Rather God wants voluntary lovers who freely choose to love and obey God. This sacred gift of free will does not take away human responsibility for our choices and the Bible teaches we will give an account of our actions and stand before the judgment seat of Christ to receive reward or punishment for our deeds in the body.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-14
The choice in the abortion debate should never have been the choice to save or take a life. The choice is sex. This is free will. Our choices have consequences and when we violate God’s design and intention for sex – within the bounds of a covenant marriage – we suffer consequences. One of those consequences is the fruit of the womb. A seed goes in a baby comes out. This is not rocket science. If you want to deal with this the correct way it’s stopping the sexual revolution and making the choice to limit sex to the confines of marriage. This restriction of the Bible to one man and one woman in a life-long covenant relationship is God’s design and prescription for the flourishing and benefit of all people including children.
1 Timothy 3:2, “must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.
God in his perfect wisdom knew and knows that children and family and society at large will flourish when life is done in covenant family with the Lord at the center – the cord of three strands that is not easily broken. This design and choice God gives us is the choice that protestors around the nation who oppose the overturning of Roe need to consider and understand. The choice is clear, having sex outside of God’s prescribed boundaries has consequences. Sex outside of marriage is not God’s best and does not lead to human flourishing and to a society functioning at its best.
Exodus 20:13 states in no uncertain terms, “You shall not murder.”
God will not impose his will on anyone of us. The choice to have sex outside of God’s design leading to unwanted pregnancies does not justify the taking of innocent life. As we mentioned the process of conception to delivery is in the hand of the Lord. Life is his initiative and his work – breathing life into all living things:
Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7
The invention of modern medical science that makes the process “easy and quick” does not negate the moral responsibility and imperative in the Bible and throughout history that thou shall not kill. The fact that our nation would support and endorse the taking of innocent life and make it convenient for people to do is an abomination and a dark night for our nation. While I am 100% for less government interference in the lives of its responsible citizens, I am even more than 100% for a nation making murder illegal and protecting its most vulnerable. While man has for thousands of years decided to go their own way and live a life apart from God, for a nation and government, and private medical providers to legalize and accommodate a process by which killing innocent life in the womb is accessible and at low cost is an abomination not seen since the likes of ancient civilizations where God spoke to his people as recorded in the book of Deuteronomy saying, “You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.”
God have mercy.
While our nation may not be worshipping engraved images, wood structures, or metal figures, we’ve bowed the knee to a sexual revolution, convenience, and lack of personal responsibility, and the breaking of family values. Yet God’s word remains true and every man a liar. As God’s word says, “Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. Acts 17:25
With the gift of choice comes great responsibility. The choice is clear and the choice is having sex outside the bounds of what God has designed for human flourishing – inside the bounds of a marriage between man and woman. This is God’s design, this is how we were created and what we were created for.
So for the President who said, “I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned,” the choice here is clear and that choice starts long before conception. It’s not a choice to kill. Two wrongs never make a right.
