Former US Attorney General William Barr weighed in on the indictment of former President Donald J. Trump, calling it “legally pathetic” and an “abomination”. The case is held together by chicken wire, paperclips, and rubber bands. It’s a lousy case; it’s a shameful episode in our history.
“It’s the epitome of the abuse of prosecutorial power to bring a case that would not be brought against anyone else. They are going after the man, not a crime. And the legal theory, frankly, is pathetically weak,” Barr argued.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg brought the charges after investigating two hush money payments: $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and the $150,000 payment to Karen McDougal, former Playboy model. Hush money payments are not illegal and since the charges are sealed, it’s speculated that federal prosecutors are saying the payments amounted to illegal, unreported assistance to Trump’s campaign
Trump also responded with his own statement, saying, in essence, the political witchhunt continues and most everyone in the country save liberal Democrats are seeing it too.
Trump went on to list his overwhelming supportfrom Republicans and their response to the indictment here. This includes Governor Greg Abbott of Texas who stated, “Weaponization of our courts for political grievances is an abhorrent abuse of power. The George Soros-supported NYC DA is only furthering the radical liberal agenda to have elections determined at the jury box rather than the ballot box. America deserves better.”
Trump and his attorneys resolved to fight this and win. Stating prosecuting a former President will backfire.
“And it’s a disgrace if … it turns out to be what we think it is,” Barr added.
