Tony Evans cites falling short of Biblical standards of leadership
In a heartfelt and emotional statement to the congregation of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF) this past Sunday, Dr. Evans announced his decision to step down from his role as senior pastor, a position he has held for nearly five decades. Dr. Evans’s tenure has been marked by significant growth and a steadfast commitment to the Word of God, transforming a small house gathering of 10 people into a thriving church community.
“It has been my glorious joy and privilege to serve as your senior pastor over these last 48 years,” Dr. Evans wrote. “I praise God for giving me the opportunity to witness His hand of power and blessing.”
Joys and sorrows, successes and failures
Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Evans acknowledged the many “joys and sorrows, successes and failures, mountains and valleys” that he and the church have experienced together. Throughout these times, he emphasized, God’s presence has been a constant source of strength and guidance.
Dr. Evans also addressed a personal matter, candidly sharing that he had fallen short of the church’s supreme standard of truth. “A number of years ago, I fell short of that standard. I am, therefore, required to apply the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration to myself that I have applied to others,” he confessed. Although details were not shared, Evans admitted to lapses in righteous judgment.
Healing and restoration process
With the full support of his family and church elders, Dr. Evans has decided to undergo a healing and restoration process. This period will allow him time for spiritual recovery and healing, stepping back from his pastoral duties to focus on his restoration.
During this transitional phase, Pastor Gibson and the church leadership will ensure the continued vibrant ministry of OCBF. Dr. Evans reminded the congregation, “You serve the Lord Jesus Christ, not a man.” He expressed his deep love for the congregation and his confidence in God’s ongoing work within the church community.
“I have never loved you more than I love you right now, and I’m trusting God to walk me through this valley,” Dr. Evans shared. He thanked the congregation for their love, prayers, support, and forgiveness as he embarks on this next chapter of his spiritual journey. He encouraged them to keep their focus on Jesus, “the author and finisher of our faith.”
As Dr. Evans transitions into a role as a worshiper within the congregation, he looks forward to witnessing God’s continued blessings and the ongoing impact of OCBF’s mission to build kingdom disciples and servants.
For updates on the church’s direction and activities during this period, the congregation is advised to stay tuned to communications from Pastor Gibson and the leadership team.
