Popular Christian Series Will Stream On Prime Video
Dallas Jenkins’ 5&2 Studios, creator of the critically acclaimed chronicles of Jesus’ ministry, The Chosen, has signed an industry-altering deal with Amazon MGM Studios that will make Prime Video its exclusive U.S. streamer. The news comes on the heels of the February 27 release by Amazong of another faith-based series, “House of David.”
The partnership with Jenkins includes not only The Chosen but every 5&2 Studios’ property – The Chosen in The Wild with Bear Grylls and previously produced projects, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, What If, and Midnight Clear. Additionally, Prime Video bought the rights for the first five seasons of The Chosen and will distribute the impending final two seasons in theaters.
Jenkins posted the news directly on The Chosen YouTube channel.
Why Dallas Jenkins Chose Amazon MGM Studios
Before this deal, Jenkins had some of his projects, including The Chosen season four, available for rent or streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video. He commented that Amazon’s commitment to faith-based television has been consistent.
“They’ve shown time and time again that they care deeply about this show and its fans. This partnership will help us improve and share the story with even more people around the world,” he said.
The Chosen’s fifth season leads up to Jesus’ final weeks of ministry. Jenkins’ production company plans on national distribution, but only on a select basis in U.S. theaters. Mainstream audiences haven’t been able to appreciate the spectacular storytelling and intimate aesthetic Jenkins brings to the series, specifically through Jonathan Roumie’s authentic portrayal of Jesus Christ.
Box-Office Earnings
Previously, only parts of seasons three and four were released through Fathom Events in select theaters, earning close to $60 million at the worldwide box office. Comparatively, the average theatrical run of a nationally released film is four weeks, earning approximately $57.34 million per film.
Using Amazon MGM Studios’ marketing and streaming muscle should help get The Chosen season five in front of substantially more people. To promote the film, the newly minted team kicked off another partnership with revered photographer Annie Leibovitz, who took compelling images of the Last Supper, which have already been featured in Times Square.
Dallas Jenkins and Amazon MGM plan on a national theatrical release during Holy Week, April 13-20.
