Antonio Banderas and Joel Smallbone among others star in new faith-based musical
What do you get when you take the musical festivities of Glee and the story of Jesus from the Bible and put them together? You get the new renditioning of Jeuss’ miraculous birth in ‘Journey to Behtlehem’ a new faith-based movie out in theaters now starring an unlikely cast of characters played by some of the biggest names in Christendom and Hollywood. The all-star cast includes Christian musicians, Lecrae, For King and Country’s Joel Smallbone, and most notably Antonio Banderas as King Herod.
Journey to Bethlehem is a Sony AFFIRM Films production led by Rich Peluso. Peluso shared with CBN News it was not an easy task getting Banderos to sign on. But after traveling to Spain, attending one of his shows and getting back stage, they convinced him and closed the deal.
“I think Antonio saw the passion of … the producers and … realized this music is very special,” Peluso told CBN, “And we landed Antonio, and he brought a magic to the character of King Herod.”
Journey to Bethlehem is playing now at a theater near you.
So far the musical movie is getting mostly positive reviews. The negative reviews say mostly the same thing – the filmmakers went too far with it’s creative license and is crossing the line. Those who liked it were thrilled with the story, saying it is refreshing and energizing to their faith.
Brian Bogan enjoyed the film. He shared, “Wow and wow – the movie was outstanding! The acting, music (Oscar and Grammy worthy?) and overall production was amazing. They did a great job sprinkling in comedy – the 3 wise men in particular were hysterical. This movie is for everyone, family friendly and really needed in a time of so much hate and war. It is musical story about love (a love story), faith, family, God and his greatest gift to us, Jesus. You will LOVE IT when you see it!”
Britt Flanders agreed, writing, “This movie was inspiring and very well casted. Milo Manheim and Fiona Palomo were the perfect Mary and Joseph and everyone needs to go and see this movie. You will not be disappointed. 10/10”
