Arbitrator found Uber and its driver liable in the 2023 State Route 73 death

The parents of 23-year-old Emily Normandin-Parker have been awarded $40 million after an arbitrator found Uber and driver Vu Tran liable for her 2023 death on State Route 73 in Orange County.
Normandin-Parker was fatally struck by traffic after she and a friend were left on the freeway during an Uber ride. The arbitrator concluded Uber was vicariously liable for the driver’s conduct.
Uber has disputed the ruling and said it continues to make safety improvements. The decision came through private arbitration and does not set a binding legal precedent.
