High winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding battered the Northeast as emergency crews worked to restore electricity.
A slow-moving nor’easter left at least one person dead, flooded coastal communities and knocked out electricity to more than 130,000 customers across the Northeast.
The New York City Housing Authority said an employee was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn as strong winds and heavy rain moved through the city.
Downed trees and power lines contributed to outages across the mid-Atlantic and New England. Dangerous surf, high tides and road flooding were also reported along parts of the coast.
The National Weather Service warned that coastal and bayside communities faced the greatest flooding risk during periods of high tide. Officials urged drivers not to enter flooded roads and advised residents near the coast to follow local evacuation and emergency instructions.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency placed regional response coordination centers at an enhanced level and positioned teams in New England in case outages became more widespread.
Outage totals and local conditions remain subject to change as restoration work continues.
