Made in the image of God
“Even if you accomplish all of your dreams or none of them at all, you are still valuable and you are still good enough because you are made in the image of God,” senior graduating valedictorian Lydia Owens shared at Woodmont High School in South Carolina. The graduating senior wanted to use her speech to glorify God and see the tragedy of losing her mother turned around for good. Owens recalled the loss of her mother and how she had no one or nothing to fall back on except Jesus Christ.
“When tragedy struck my life, it was not my grades nor my accomplishments that helped me navigate through that loss. When everything else in my life felt uncertain, the only person I could depend on to stay the same was Jesus,” Owens explained.
In an interview with WHNS, Owens shared that her mom inspired her to this day.
Encouraging faith
“She always pushed me to be my best self and always encouraged me in my faith,” Owens told WHNS. “She’s the reason that I have such a strong faith. She was the example of how to be a Godly woman and how to love people intentionally.”
Owens shared her faith boldly in front of her fellow public school graduates and called them to have peace and trust in God in the midst of the changes and hardships in their lives.
His grace is sufficient
“You don’t have to worry about whether you or not you will be successful because God promises that his grace is sufficient for us and his power is made perfect in our weaknesses,” Owens shared in her speech.
For now, Owens is just happy her story can be a strength to others and point people to Jesus. Owens plans to major in elementary education at Anderson University next year.
