Democratic committee leaders are planning oversight of President Trump, his administration and his family, while impeachment remains only a possibility.
House Democrats are preparing a broad investigation agenda that they could pursue if they gain control of the chamber in November’s elections.
A Democratic majority would bring subpoena authority, larger committee staffs and control over congressional hearings. Party leaders say potential subjects include Trump family business activities, the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, federal health policy and decisions involving Iran and Venezuela.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats intend to investigate what they describe as corruption and abuse of power. Rep. Jamie Raskin and other senior Democrats are already identifying priorities for committees they could lead.
No new investigation or impeachment proceeding has been authorized. The plans depend entirely on Democrats winning the House.
Asked about impeachment, Jeffries said party leaders have neither ruled it in nor ruled it out. President Trump was impeached twice during his first administration and acquitted by the Senate both times.
The Associated Press report detailing the plans did not include a new White House response. Any allegations examined by a future Congress would still require evidence and would not constitute findings merely because an investigation was opened.
