Viral songwriter shares faith before millions online
Viral songwriter Oliver Anthony “broke the internet” with the hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” becoming the first artist to debut atop the Hot 100 with no prior chart history. Anthony is also one of a handful of unsigned artists to top the Hot 100. “Rich Men North of Richmond” is the 23rd song to top the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs chart.
To commemorate the special moment, Anthony appeared on the number 1 podcast in the nation, The Joe Rogan Experience, and shared his faith in a raw, authentic way for approximately 11 million active listeners who follow Rogan.
Anthony, a new Christian, shared how he finally surrendered to God’s plan for his life. He subsequently wrote the song, and the rest as they say is history.
“I just changed my perspective. I quit worrying about me and started worrying about what it is I’m supposed to do. It talks in the Bible about being a servant. You know giving up my desire and my will and whatever it is I want to do. I don’t know the best way to describe it. Trying to use what I have as a tool versus doing what I can in the moment to give myself whatever satisfaction that it is I am trying to get. It’s about letting go of your ego. It’s about making God and what he wants to my idol over everything else.”
