A graduation ceremony at this Christian university has gone viral

In less than a week, over 8 million people have viewed a viral Instagram reel from Oral Roberts University (ORU) showcasing its 2024 Commencement ceremony. The clip features the graduating class singing “Goodness of God” by CeCe Winans, highlighting a moment of unity and celebration. This contrasts with the unrest and disruptions at many other U.S. colleges.

“This video and the global response to it are testaments to the Spirit-empowered culture at our University,” said ORU President Dr. William M. Wilson. He emphasized that the university aims to provide an education that is both academically excellent and spiritually enriching. Dr. Wilson noted that the widespread resonance of the Commencement worship reflects a broader desire for faith and peace.

Capturing the viral moment

Alexis Franklin, a senior who captured the viral moment, commented on the significance of the song: “The lyrics encompass all the emotions of someone who has finished their degree. The Class of 2024 made it to the finish line, and this moment was like capturing everybody’s ‘thank you’ to God.”

Kimmie Simon, Director of ORU’s Worship Center, explained how worship fosters connection and healing: “Even though we come from different walks of life, different seasons, and different places, we can worship the same God in spirit and truth. Worship is a powerful change agent that brings us closer to Jesus and each other.”

Hunger and thirst for Christian education

In the past academic year, ORU recorded over 6,500 students, including the largest freshman class in its history. With enrollment growth continuing for the 15th consecutive year, students from 152 nations and all 50 states are choosing ORU for its unique combination of academic and spiritual growth.

The viral video serves as a testament to a growing movement of worship, baptism, and revival coming out of college campuses, where bold worship and unity are central to the student experience.
