The FBI confirmed that Trump was the target of what they called “an attempted assassination.” The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh of Hawaii, originally from North Carolina, has a lengthy criminal record. Routh has been politically active in recent years, frequently posting about politics online. He exclusively donated to Democratic candidates and causes dating back to 2019 and was particularly vocal about his disdain for Trump. On April 22, Routh posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), “DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose,” signaling his strong political motivations.
Routh’s support for Ukraine, which he frequently highlighted in his posts, has also drawn attention to his connections. Adding a further twist, Routh’s Facebook account was wiped shortly after the incident, raising concerns about election interference.
