New CEO to Lead Museum’s Mission of Transformative Biblical Engagement

The Museum of the Bible this week welcomed the appointment of Dr. Carlos Campo as its new chief executive officer, effective June 17, 2024. Dr. Campo, a seasoned academic leader with a deep-rooted connection to the museum, brings a wealth of experience and a visionary approach to his new role.

This transition follows the leadership of Mr. Harry Hargrave, whose tenure has been marked by excellence, integrity, and grace. The Board of Trustees expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Hargrave, who has been instrumental in making the Museum of the Bible a reality from its inception to its opening in 2017 and beyond. Under his leadership, the museum has become a world-class destination, overcoming challenges like the pandemic-based closure.

Hargrave reflected on his time at the museum, saying, “I’ve been fortunate to have a remarkable and varied career, but serving here has been the high point. It has been the honor of a lifetime to play a meaningful role in making the historic vision a reality. Countless lives have been profoundly impacted by this institution—I have seen it every day. It is the right time to pass the baton precisely because the museum is so strong.”

Next chapter in the Museum of the Bible’s story

Steve Green, Chairman of the Board of Directors, added, “Harry Hargrave has been a member of our founding generation, whose valuable contributions to the museum’s success will never be forgotten. We look forward with great anticipation to the museum’s future under Carlos Campo’s leadership, confident in his knowledge and passion to take us into the next chapter of the Museum of the Bible’s story. The relationship between these two exceptional leaders will make this a seamless transition.”

Dr. Campo has been a member of the board of the Museum of the Bible since 2015. His appointment to the position of CEO was a unanimous decision by the board, recognizing his dedication, leadership, and strategic vision.

Dr. Campo’s illustrious career in academic leadership includes serving as the 30th president of Ashland University, president of Regent University, and vice president of academics at the College of Southern Nevada. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) and was recognized in 2016 as the “Liberal Arts Alumnus of the Year,” the highest and most prestigious alumni award given by the college. He has also served as the chair of the Hispanic Education Alliance of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and is routinely ranked among the nation’s most influential Latino Christian leaders.

Engaging culture with the world’s most influential book

Reflecting on his new role, Dr. Campo stated, “This museum is unique in the world, and therefore comes with a unique responsibility. We are engaging culture with the world’s most influential book in the world’s most influential city. A world leader among museums, Museum of the Bible pushes the boundaries of technology and interaction, aiming to redefine the museum experience by offering visitors a powerful, enriching journey steeped in the Bible’s narrative and its unparalleled influence on the world and in history. All of these things and more make serving as CEO a tremendous privilege. Karen and I can’t wait.”

Carlos and his wife Karen have been married for 44 years and are proud parents to three children—Brandon, Vanessa, and Brett & Sarah—and grandparents to three grandchildren, Carter, Jacob, and Parker. Their family’s commitment to faith and education resonates with the values that Dr. Campo brings to his new role at the museum.
