Americans across the nation are coming together today for the 2024 National Day of Prayer, continuing a tradition that dates back to the very roots of the country. From the earliest calls to prayer by the Founding Fathers seeking divine wisdom, to the modern-day gatherings uniting communities in faith, the National Day of Prayer remains a cornerstone of spiritual reflection and communal unity.

This year’s theme, “Lift Up The Word – Light Up The World,” draws inspiration from the faithful prayer found in 2 Samuel 22:29-31 ESV. The theme verse resonates with believers, emphasizing the role of scripture as a guiding light in times of darkness and a source of strength in overcoming challenges.

Today, across this great nation, thousands of Americans will join together in prayer, interceding for their neighbors, nation, and leaders. The National Day of Prayer Task Force president, Kathy Branzell, emphasizes the transformative power of faith and prayer in illuminating the world with hope and dispelling darkness. Branzell states, “Some may say the world is getting darker. But as long as God’s people are reading and relying on the Word, believing and living His Word, praying and practicing His Word, the world is full of light that exposes and dispels the darkness. The world will get better and brighter if we commit to live out this year’s National Day of Prayer theme, Lift Up the Word, Light Up the World.”

The day’s events will include tens of thousands of local prayer gatherings in all 50 states and several U.S. territories. Additionally, the annual National Broadcast, co-hosted by Rev. A.R. Bernard and NDP Task Force president Kathy Branzell, will reach audiences through television, radio, websites, social media, and streaming services starting at 8 p.m. ET.

The National Day of Prayer tradition traces back to the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775, setting aside a day of prayer even before the formal founding of the United States of America. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer, further solidifying the importance of spiritual reflection in national life. In 1988, President Reagan designated the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May, emphasizing the significance of seeking divine guidance during critical challenges and decisions.

As Americans lift their voices in prayer and reflection on May 2nd, the National Day of Prayer serves as a reminder of the enduring values and beliefs that unite individuals and communities across the nation. It stands as a testament to the power of faith and collective prayer in navigating both triumphs and tribulations, lighting up the world with hope and resilience.
